Invasion of the Culinary Students
About 35 students and three teachers from The Bucks County Technical High School culinary program descended on the Philadelphia Wholesale Produce Market. Their mission: find the lowest prices for produce, learn how to negotiate a fair price and conduct a professional business transaction, and determine why people shop at the Market instead of going through a distributor.
Teacher Colin Marsh has brought his students to the Market for four years running and they really love the assignment. Each team is given a benchmark (prices from an area distributor) and are asked to compare against the PWPM prices. “With $100 given to each team, they are forced to look at quality versus quantity as well as how other factors (such as their conduct and teamwork) play into the sale.”
The winning team gets $25 cash towards lunch. We know that no matter who wins this competition, everyone comes out on top. Thanks, Bucks County Technical High School!
